Bielicki Family

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

BIELICKI derives from the word biel (noun). Meaning: white, can also mean swamp, root seen in many place names.

JABLONSKI derives from the word jablon/jablonka. Meaning: apple tree.

MICHALOWSKI derives from the Polish name Michal. Meaning: who is like God.

Mathias Bielicki (1836-1902), known as Martin in New Zealand, married (1861 Liebschau) Marianna Jablonska (1842-1876), the daughter of Philip Jablonski & Marianna Michalowska. The family resided in an area of Poland ethnically known as Kociewie in the greater Gdansk area, which at this time was part of West Prussia under German occupation.

Together the couple travelled south to the Parish of Subkau (Subkowy), where Mathias worked as a farm labourer. In the village of Starenschin they had Paulina (1863-1943). Moving to the village of Rathstube (Radostowo) they had Joseph (1864-1940). In the village of Gr. Watzmirs (Wacmierz) they had the following: Johann (1866), Maria Madgalena (1867-1926), Robert Paul (1870-1871) & Anna Elizabeth (1872-1951). It was at this time the family finally moved to the village of Gerdin (Gorzedziej) where they gave birth to Franz (1875).

The family travelled for Hamburg via Gdansk from the village of Gerdin. Here they set aboard the ship "Terpsichore" sailing on the 15th of November 1875 and arriving in Wellington, New Zealand on the 18th of March 1876. On board ship the family were; Mathias 39, Marianna 31, Pauline 12, Jozef 11, Maria 7, Anna 3, Franz 2 & Augustin 2.

During the voyage there were eight deaths and five births. On arrival, the ship was immediately placed in quarantine because of typhoid and the passengers were transferred to the Quarantine Station on Soames Island, in the Wellington Harbour. One of the eight deaths during the voyage was that of Maria Bielicki (mother) who died from typhoid fever on the 4th of February 1876 and was buried at sea.

From here Martin & family travelled to the South Island where the railway was in progress, finally settling in the township of Germantown, now known as the Waikaka Valley, 5km north of Gore. How Martin coped with his large young family on first arrival in the country is hard to imagine.

During the year 1879 Martin bought section 9 of block 7 in the town of East Gore. The children seem to have followed in the railway construction, as was the occupation of some of the boys and their brother in laws.

Martin died in Dunedin on the 29th of June 1902 and is buried at the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.

Paulina married widower James Sparks in the Catholic Church at Gordon (East Gore) on the 6th of June 1888. James' first wife had died on the 14th of April 1888. James Sparks was born in Springvale, Tasmania, in 1848, the son of James Sparks, a farmer, and Sarah Bell. James came to New Zealand with his wife and family about 1876. James' association with Paulina must have started in the early 80's as their first child was born in 1882 and there were subsequent births prior to their marriage. James died on the 31st of May 1917 aged 69 & Paulina died on the 29th of September 1943 aged 80. Both are buried at the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.

Both are buried at the Allanton Cemetery.

Maria Magdalena married David Roberts in Gore in 1890. They had 2 boys & 2 girls. Maria died in Dunedin on the 19th of December 1926 & David died in 1931. Anna Elizabeth married Frank Kowalewski in a double wedding, which took place on the 1st of May 1889 as earlier mentioned. They had 1 boy & 5 girls. Anna died on the 6th of February 1951 aged 78 & Frank died on the 8th of July 1941. Both are buried at the Allanton Cemetery.
