Late in the year of 1874, the family left the village of Postelau for Hamburg, via Gdansk, where the family set aboard the ship "Fritz Reuter". While in Hamburg only sixteen year old Pauline went aboard. The original shipping list from Hamburg includes the whole family aboard ship. But Johan & Rosalie with their two children, Joseph & Bertha, remained behind, possibly due to Bertha being sick.

Filipowski/Philipowski Family

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

GRABOWSKI (Pol) grab. Meaning: hornbeam (a tree resembling a beech).

FILIPOWSKI/PHILIPOWSKI (Pol) Filip. Meaning: lover of horses.

Johann Philipowski (1839-1899) married (1857 Trampken) Rosalie Grabowska (1840-1908). While residing in the village of Sobbowitz (Sobowidz) in West Prussia, in the ethnic region of Kociewie, in the district of Gdansk, Poland, they had their first child Pauline (1858). The family moved West to the village of Postelau (Postolowo) where they had the remaining family, being; August Franz (1860-1860), Franz Johan (1862), Rosalie Anna (1864), Marianna (1866-1867), Julianna (1868-1868), Joseph (1869) & Bertha (1873).

The "Fritz Reuter" left Hamburg on the 16th of December 1874 and arrived in Napier, New Zealand on the 13th of March 1875.

The remaining family minus Bertha, whom possibly died in Hamburg, first sailed to London. They then set aboard the ship "Earl of Zetland" on the 16th of March 1875 arriving in Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 3rd of June 1875. The family aboard ship were Johan 35, Rosalie 34 & Joseph 5. The family went south to the settlement of Waihola where a number of their country folk where residing. Here Johan worked as a labourer.

Johan & Rosalie had a further addition to the family residing in Waihola being; John (1878). In the '1882 Freeholders', Johan is listed as owning land to the value of £50 in Waihola and it was while residing here that Johan was naturalised on the 10th of October 1893.

John Philipowski was buried on the 29th of December 1899 & Rosalie Philipowski on the 11th of September 1908, both at the Waihola Cemetery.
