Gaelic Sports

Our readers will doubtless remember, Tokomairiro Caledonian Society, about [ ] before New Year's Day, decided to [ ] the sports meeting which had been [ ] for that day, owing to lack of [ ] from competitors. A number of [ ] interested in this class of sport , not [ ] to see the sports die out, thereupon [ ] meeting and resolved to from a new [ ] to be called the Tokomairiro Gaelic [ ] for the purpose of carrying on sports. There was very little time in which to do anything, but the promoters got to work at once, and [ ] for a canvass of the town. This was very successful, and a programme was drawn up. It was much on the lines of the Caledonian programme, the prize-[ ] being decreased all round. It was [ ]ed that the society was starting [ ] great disadvantages, owing to the [ ] at its disposal to work up the [ ] and it was decided to make sure of [ ] out on the right side of the ledger, [ ] proved beautifully fine, and the [ ] turned out in large numbers. [ ] sum of £26 11s being taken at the gate, which, it must be admitted, [ ] highly satisfactory result. Good [ ] were received all round [ ] keen contests were witnessed in the [ ] events. The old principle of a big [ ] was done away with, and separate [ ] over different distances were sub[ ]. The handicappers were therefore [ ] able to gauge the running of the men [ ] prevent any one man from appropri[ ] all the events. Theduties of secretary [ ] in the hands of Mr. P. Walsh, who [ ] himself well up to all that was required of him. Mr. T. Kett acted as handl[ ], and succeeded in bringing the men [ ] together, while Mr. Alf. Dick[ ] was the starter. These with the committee, worked hard all day to make [ ] go smoothly. The Milton Brass Band were in attendance, under their conductor, Mr. R. M. Brookes, and played [ ] of fine music during the afternoon. [ ] sports were in every way a success, and [ ] what we can learn we may expect to [ ] the society come forward with a really [ ] programme for their next gathering.
