RIFLE SHOOTING

On Saturday afternoon the Bruce Defence Rifle Club fired the final of a two days' competition for trophies presented by Mr. Alex Stewart (Law Courts Hotel, Dunedin). There was not a large attendance of members, and the shooting generally was much below the usual standard. A dull, changeable light made it difficult to maintain elevation, but, on the other hand, the wind was fairly steady. Rifleman M. E. Paul topped the score with 63 points, getting 33 at 600 yards, easily winning the competition with an aggregate score of 126. Rifleman J. F. Halba, who has been shooting very consistently during the season, secured second (117), and Rifleman A. W. Paul third (116).
Conditions.-Competition to occupy two Saturdays; both days' scores to count; seven shots (sighters optional) at 500 and 600 yards. Handicap limit 66. First, second and third prizes.

Owing to a falling-off of membership this season, and a general lack of that interest which was usually manifested, Kaitangata Defence Rifle Club has abandoned the proposal of reviving the South Otago Championship Meeting, usually held at Kaitangata during the Xmas. holidays.
It is anticipated that two or three prominent members of the Bruce Club will compete at the second annual meeting of the Canterbury Rifle Associaltion, to be held at Christchurch on 1st and 2nd January. Liberal prizes are offered and the meeting promises to be a record one.
On account of the approaching holidays, shooting on the local rifle range will cease until after the New Year. "The Bruce Herald", 15 December 1923.
