Schools Break-up

ST. MARY’S SCHOOL, MOSGIEL

The Mosgiel School broke up yesterday afternoon, when all the scholars and a goodly number of the parents were present, the chair being occupied by the Rev. Father O’Neill. The school was established about a year ago, the teacher being Miss McLaughlin, who has proved herself to be a capable and careful schoolmistress. The attendance has been gradually increasing, until Miss McLaughlin now has a school of no small dimensions under her care. At the distribution of prizes yesterday Father O’Neill expressed his pleasure at such a successful year having been spent, and thought that the teacher was thoroughly efficient. His Lordship the Bishop had expressed his satisfaction at the children having such a careful and painstaking teacher. He (Bishop Moran) had stated that he thought the Mosgiel School could compare favourably with any school in the diocese, and that the scholars were capable of competing with the scholars of any other school. These remarks met with evident approval from those present. The children then sang several choruses, including ‘Never Forget The Dear Ones’, ‘All Hail Zealandia’, and ‘Children’s Voices;’ and miss Agnes Mehalski sang ‘Won’t You Buy My Pretty Flowers?’ very nicely. A few hymns were also contributed by the children, but the programme had to be curtailed owing to Father O’Neill having to leave early for Dunedin. The following is the Prize list:-
