Rogacki FamilySURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINSBUTZE possibly BUCA (Pol) buczec. Meaning: to hum, drone, buzz, or < buk a beech tree. KLAAS (Dut) or KLAS (Ger) Niklaus, Klaus. ROGACKI (Pol) rog. Meaning: horn, corner. A topographic name for someone who lived on a 'horn' of land i.e. outlying projecting edge of a settlement or administrative division. Franciszek Rogacki (1846-1908) married (1870 Mühlbanz) Paulina Klass (1850), the daughter of Johann Klass & Apolonica Butze. While living in the village of Stenzlau (Stanislawie), West Prussia, in the ethnic region of Kociewie in the district of Danzig (Gdansk), Poland, they gave birth to their first child Joseph (1871-1872). Franz & Paulina left the village of Stenzlau for Hamburg, via Gdansk, where they set aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. On board ship were Franciszek 26, & Paulina 21. Also on board was Marianna Rogacka aged 23, (possibly Franz's sister), who also came from the village of Stenzlau. Franz was sent down to Greytown (Allanton) along with his countrymen, to work on the Southern Railways. While settling on the Taieri they had their family being: John (1873-1873), Frank (1874), Anthony (1876), Annie (1879), Rosa (1881-1905), Thomas (1883), Maria (1885) & Minnie (1887). In the 1882 Freeholders Frank is listed as owning 1 acre to the value of £220 in as a labourer residing in Mosgiel. At a later date the Rogacki family moved to the Polish Settlement at Marshland, Christchurch. Frank Rogatski was naturalised on the 18th of November 1899 residing in Marshland. He died on the 27th of September 1908 and is buried at the Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch. Rogacki Family Tree |
