SCHULZ (Ger) Schultheiß, Schulze. Meaning: Village headman, mayor. SLIWINSKI (Pol) sliwa. Meaning: Plum-tree, sloe (small wild plum). ZAWADZKI (Pol) zawada. Meaning: obstacle, impediment, also common toponyms - Zawada, Zawady. Johann Valentin Schulz (1846-1893), the son of Jacob Schulz & Anna Zawadzka, was born in the village of Dalwin in the Parish of Mühlbanz (Milobadz), West Prussia, in the ethnic region of Kociewie, in the district of Danzig (Gdansk), Poland. Johann left the village of Rukoschin (Rukocin), just south of Dalwin, for Hamburg, via Gdansk, where he set aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. Johan was 26 years old. After being housed in the emigration barracks at Dunedin, he was sent down to Greytown (Allanton) along side his countrymen, to work on the Taieri section of the main trunk railway line. As railway construction headed south so did Johann, settling in the Gore district. Johann married (1875 Invercargill) Marianna Rydzewska (1859-1932), the daughter of August Rydzewski & Rosalia Sliwinska. They were also aboard the ship "Palmerston". In 1877, John Schultz took up section 490, approximately 196 acres, in Croydon Bush west of Gore, and Certificate of Title was issued in 1881. Here they had the first of their family being: Frank Joseph (1877-1953), Martha Elizabeth (1881-1943), Joseph James (1882-1966), & James Thomas Andrew (1884-1885). In March of 1884 the eldest son, Frank Schultz, enrolled at Croydon Bush School, but left the district in December of the same year. At this time John sold his property to Roderick McLeod and the family moved to East Gore firstly to Halton Street, then Wentworth Street. Here they had the remainder of their family being: Adam (1886-1886), James Paul (1887-1973), Alexander Andrew (1890) & Thomas Andrew (1893-1972). Johann is listed as a farmer & labourer in the Gore district in the 1887 & 1888 Southland & Otago Directories. Mary Schultz was naturalised on the 24th of August 1926 residing in Gore. Mrs. Mary Hoffman, daughter of Frank Schultz, told Paula Dickie in 1987: "It was marvellous what they did... they made their own bread, everything was homemade... oatmeal cakes & fruit cake." Unfortunately Johann died at the age of 47 on the 2nd of November 1893 so Frank and John kept the family. Marianna died on the 22nd of January 1932. Both are buried at the Gore Cemetery. Frank was a farmer on Mornington Farm, Waikana (the farm of his father-in-law, Jim Young), then moved to Upper Charlton. He had seven children. Schulz Family Tree |
