Report of the Medical Officer of the ship "Sussex" from London to Otago July 7/74.

Sailing from London on the 14th April 74 with a full compliment of mixed immigrants : 495 Souls besides a crew of 47: after the usual apparently careful [ ] of the comm? of immigration in tow of a powerful steam ship ... (difficult to read writing).

Port Chalmers
20th July 1874

Sir,

We have the honor to report that the ship "Sussex" arrived in Port from London on the 17th inst, having made a passage of 91 days.

The Immigrants by her numbered 489 souls equal to 400 Statute adults. There were two births and eight deaths on the passage, the latter being children of tender age, two of whom were ill when they embarked.

The general health of the immigrants was very satisfactory, there being only one man confined to bed on the arrival of the ship.

On inspection we have great pleasure in bearing testimony to the extreme cleanliness of every compartment of the ship, for which the Surgeon Superintendent and matron deserve every praise. The fittings were as usual in London ships. On the commissioners, the immigrants unanimously expressed their satisfaction with the treatment they had received on the passage. We confidently assert, that the provisions of the Charter Party and Passengers Act, were complied with to the letter.

The medical comforts and extras put on board for children were abundant and given out as necessity required.

The Captain, Surgeon Superintendent and officers performed their respective duties very conscientiously and we recommend that they be paid the usual gratuities.

We have the honor to be
Sir

Immigration Memorandun No. 342
Immigration Office Dunedin "Sussex"

The Under Secretary
for Immigration
Wellington.

Some German families who arrived per ship "Sussex" in July last bitterly complain that their luggage including all their personal effects was not sent to them by any of the ships following the "Sussex" from London as the officers connected with the shipping in the Agent Generals department promised to do.

It would appear they arrived per steamer from Hamburg barely in time for leaving by the Sussex and as the ship was ready for sea, there was no time to trans-ship their luggage. It should however have followed by the "Peter Denny". Several ships have arrived from London since, but no luggage for the Germans came to hand. They have been put to a great deal of inconvenience for want of their clothing.

I append a list of the names fo the persons referred to.

March 31st 1876

Dear Sir,

In answer to your enquiry, I beg to say I remember taking some luggage from Blackwall Pier, to a ship at Greenhithe on April 14th, 1874, and I have looked at my books, I find that is correct. With regard to luggage being left on the "Secrets" deck, I can safely say that no luggage of any description was left on board, that it was delivered on board the ship, just as it was received on board the "Secret", or else I should have communicated with you immediately to the contrary.

Yours truly
H. Palmer
Master of Tug "Secret".

Agent General for New Zealand.

Sir,

In reply to yours of the 30th March requesting us to make enquiries relating to the loss of passengers luggage per ship "Sussex". We now beg to inform you of the following circumstances.

On the 14th April 1874, we conveyed a party of German emigrants & luggage (by Vans) to the South West India Docks, for the ship "Sussex". On arriving at the docks we were informed the ship had just left. At the suggestion of Capt. Ashby of the N.Z.S.Co. we engaged a tug to convey the passengers & luggage to the ship. On arrival of the tug at Greenhithe, we were informed that all would not be able to embark in consequence of which 16½ Adults & their luggage were brought back by the tug to Blackwall; on arriving at Blackwall the passengers were conveyed to lodgings, and on the next day 15th were conveyed to the ship "Sussex" then lying off Gravesend. We saw the luggage belonging to the passengers safely delivered on board the "Sussex". We have also to inform you, that we have made enquiries of the Capt, of the tug, and have received a letter from him, to the effect, that he delivered the goods on board the ship "Sussex".

We trust this statement will meet with your approval, & that it will throw some [ ] that some compenstation be made to these unfortunate Immigrants.

I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
(sgd.) Henry Haughton
Consul

Imperial German Consulate.

Dunedin N.Z.
May 30th 1876

Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of yesterday enclosing letters from the Agent General and others in London relative to the missing luggage of certain German immigrants who arrived in Otago per ship "Sussex" in July 1874 and now living at Waipahee.

From the date of your letter and that of the Agent General in London, two years appear to have elapsed. Surely there must have been most unnecessary delay somewhere in the prosecution of these enquiries. To the neglect that has been thus shown may be attributed the loss of the luggage belonging to these poor people who appear to have landed in great distress from this cause, and to have been indebted to the kindness of their fellow passengers for the necessary clothing during the voyage.

Under these circumstances I do think their case should be brought under the notice of the minister of immigration in order.

Re. Compensation to Sussex immigrants on a/c of lost luggage?Recommends £3/10/- to each immigrant..

With reference to your mem. 157 of 10th inst., asking me to make enquiries of the nature and extent of the losses sustained by nine German immigrants per ship "Sussex". I have the honor to report that they lost all their bedding and most of their luggage. One of the immigrants estimates his loss at £18- all the rest having estimated at a lower rate.

After consultation with Mr. Houghton the German Consul, I have come to the conclusion that a sum of £3/10/- paid to each would be sufficient compensation and satisfy the applicants -
