The annual sports meeting of the Waihola Calendonian Society was held in Mr. Wilson's paddock at Waihola on Monday. The weather was raw and dull. A cold wind was blowing, and misty showers came along too frequently to be pleasant. In the morning it looked as though the attendance would be poor and the "gate" suffer badly, but as the day wore on the people of the district turned up and there must have been about 700 present. The takings at the gate amounted to £23 17s, which was about £6 below last year's amount. The varous events were mostly well contested, and the chief interest centred in the races and wrestling. The entries were at times rather slow in coming in, and the starting time was frequently delayed while some energetic committee-man hustled round and brought up an extra competitor or two, so as to have the requisite number of starters. To the committee, secretary and treasurer and in fact all the office bearers present; every credit is due for the measure of success achieved. One or two events, it is true were dropped out, and with the exception of the bicycle road race, we do not think they were missed. With regard to this latter item, we think there was certainly some bungling somewhere. It was announced that this event would be post entry. We know that a sufficient number did enter during the day and we also know that a competitor came from Balclutha and another from Milton, and that disgust was expressed when it was given out that the race would not take place. The Waihola Handicap was won by D. Wilson of Otakia, and it may be mentioned here that Otakia was very much to the front throughout the day. In the one mile handicap Bruce (Allanton), ran well and deserved his win, but the feature of the race was the fine running of Fogarty from scratch. The wrestling under 10½ stone brought out a number of competitors, and was very hotly contested. The win of W. McKay was well earned and proved popular, while J. C. McDonald (Milburn), was a good second. D. Hynes (Fairfax), wrestled very well. The hammer throwing competition was rather easily won by Skinner, and at the conclusion of the event this fine athlete gave an exhibition throw. When measured it proved to be 141ft 4 inches. This, we understand, is an Australasian record, beating that previously held by Skinner. The Outram band were in attendance during the day, and their music probably assisted greatly in keeping up the spirits of the spectators to the end. Pipers W. and D. Bruce, of Greytown, also played during the day.
