Anis Family (pronounced Aa-neese)

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

ANIS possibly (Ger) Hans or equivalent Jan or from the son of Annis (Eng), the popular pronunciation of Agnes. Meaning: Pure, chaste.

BRANDT/BRANT (Ger) Hildebrand. Meaning: Dweller on a farm cleared by burning or dweller near the (Brant) steep.

CHEŁKOWSKI/CHERKOWSKI (Pol) chełch. Toponym: Chełchy.

DEMER/DEMMER a variant of Dempster (Eng, Scot). Meaning: Occupational name for a judge or arbiter of minor disputes.

ORŁOWSKI (Rus) Orłóv & (Pol) orzeł. Meaning: Eagle or descendant of one with eagle-like characteristics. From the nickname Oryol - eagle.

STOLZ/STOLC (Ger) stolz Meaning: proud.

Residing in the village of Sobbowitz (Sobowidz), Simon Anis (1801-1865) married Regina Demmer (1804-1887), the daughter of Mathias Demmer & Elizabeth Brant. In October of 1828, they exchanged vows at the Roman Catholic Church of "Assumption of Our Lady" at Gr. Trampken (Trąbki Wielkie), West Prussia, ethnically the northern region of Kociewie, located in the Danzig (woj.gdańskie) district of Poland. They remained in Sobbowitz where they had the following children; Johan (1826), Marianna (1826-1880), Anna Barbara (1828) Joseph Valentin (1831), & Barbara (1833). Moving south to the village of Liebenhoff (Zajączkowo) in the Parish of Muhlbanz (Miłobądz) they had a son, Franz (1839-1921). From here the family moved south to the village of Scherpingen (Szczerbęcin) in the Parish of Gardschau (Godziszewo) where they had the remaining family; Michael (1841), Jacob (1843-1846), Barbara Rosalia (1846-1850), & Franciszka Paulina (1849-1939). Some time after 1850 the family moved south to the village of Klein Turse (Małe Turze).

Marianna Anis, of Scherpingen (Szczerbęcin), married Martin Grenz (1825-1896), the son of Joseph Grenca & Florentine Zurawska of Klein Turse, at the Roman Catholic Church of "Saint John Nepomuncen" in the Parish of Gardschau on the 16th of November 1851. They later had a daughter Anna born around (1863).

Franz Anis married Veronica Cherkowska (Chełkowska) (1842-1902), the daughter of Albert Cherkowski & Catharina Stolc of Klein Turse, at "Saint John Nepomuncen" on the 10th of September 1865. While remaining in Klein Turse they had the following children; Joseph (1866-1868), Rosalia (1867-1868), Maria (1869), Franz (1870-1920), Franciszka (1872-1949), & Anna (1874-1947).

Franciszka Paulina Anis married August Orłowski (1840-1930), the son of Joseph Orłowski & Bridget Parobkowicz of Klein Turse, at "Saint John Nepomuncen" on the 17th of October 1869. August & Franciszka moved southwest to the village of Labuhnken (Trzcińsk) where they had the following children: Franciszek (1870), & Maria (1872). The family left the village of Labuhnken for the Port of Hamburg, Germany were they set aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. Listed on board were; August 32, Franciszka 22, Franz 2 & Maria 6 months.

From the Dunedin immigration barracks they headed south first to the settlement of Greytown (Allanton) to work on the railway through the Taieri and then on to Waihola as the line progressed south. Here they had the following children; Martha (1875), Annie (1876), August Joseph (1878-1963), John (1880), Bernard (1882), James (1884-1970), Alexander (1885), Michael Francis (1889) & Fanny Clara (1891).

Nearly two years after Franciszka & August Orłowski arrived in New Zealand, the families of Franz & Veronica Annis, Martin & Marianna Grenz (nee Annis), their mother-in-law Regina Annis and Franciszka Cherkowska (youngest sister to Veronica) all decided to migrate to New Zealand. Franz, Veronica & Franciszka left the village of Klein Turse meeting up with Martin & Marianna Grenz with mother-in-law Regina Annis from the village of Klein Malsau (Małżewko) for the city of Hamburg, Germany. They all set aboard the ship "Reichstag" departing on the 10th of May 1874 arriving at Wellington, New Zealand on the 6th of August 1874. Listed on board ship were; Franz Annis 35, Veronika 30, Maria 4, Franz, 3, Franciszka 2, Anna 1, Regine Annis 63, Franciszka Chilkowska 17, Martin Grenz 44, Marianna 44, & Anna 9. Here the families set south to Waihola to meet up with family there.

Franz Annis purchased sections 10 to 14 of block 23 in the settlement of Waihola on the 21st of November 1876 and in the 1882 Freeholders he is listed as owning 1 acre at Waihola to the value of Ł120. On the 10th of June 1890 Franz purchased section 59 of Block I in the Clarendon district high above the settlement of Waihola overlooking a grandeur view of the lake. Here the family built a wooden cottage, their second home, next to the old stone dairy. Later Frank was naturalised on the 30th of November 1899 residing at Waihola.

Martin & Marianna Grenz along with their daughter Anna of 11 years settled in Waihola where Martin is recorded as purchasing section 16, block 19 on the 21st of November 1876. Here Marianna died on the 15th of August 1880 aged 54. Martin later moved to the settlement of Allanton where he married Mary Frawley and resided until his death in 1896. Anna Grenz married William McDonald on the 25th of December 1889 at Knox Church, Dunedin.

Franciszka Cherkowski (Chełkowski) later married Franz Klimeck in 1882 at the house of Franz & Veronica Annis in Waihola.

Regina Anis died on the 8th of December 1890 at Waihola aged 86.Grave Veronica Annis died on the 11th of June 1902 aged 59 & Franz Annis died on the 19th of August 1921 aged 82. Grave All are buried at the Waihola Cemetery.
