Waihola Harvest Home Ball.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]
The dancing season at Waihola opened on Friday night, when the harvest home festival was held in Paterson's Hall. The decorations of the hall reflected great credit on those who had carried them out; fern, cabbage, and fir trees, and other greenery, along with the appropriate sheaves of oats, etc., set off the hall, and made it have the appearance of a winter garden. The Grand March, led off by Mr. T. Burke and Miss Stevenson, was a very fine spectacle to the onlookers, and was negotiated without the slightest hitch-a difficult task, owing to the great number of dancers and the limited space to carry it out. The hall was set a-rolling with the quadrilles, and continued with great zest and glee until 4 a.m. The music was supplied by the well-known trio, Wellman's band, and the rendering was most creditable, and helped a good deal towards the success of the function. The refreshments were catered for by Mr. Crossan, (Berwick), and dispensed by Mr. and Mrs. T. Andrews in their usual genial and acceptable manner. The M.C.s (Messrs T. Burke and Carl Hankey) and the committee deserve great praise for the style in which the function was carried out. Songs were rendered at intervals during the course of the evening by Messrs A. A. Burn, A. Hall, J. Andrews, and J. Henderson in a most acceptable manner. Visitors came long distances to participate in the festival-from Taieri Beach, Henley, Allanton, Milton, Kaitangata, and Dunedin-a fact which speaks for itself. The singing of Auld Lang Syne terminated a most enjoyable evening.
The following is a description of the dresses worn by some of the ladies, kindly supplied to me by a lady who was present at the ball:- Mrs. F. Andrews, pale blue silk; Mrs. Jas.
