Bielicki Family (pronounced Bealeetskee)

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

BIELICKI (Pol) biel (noun). Meaning: white, can also mean swamp, root seen in many habitation names.

JABŁOŃSKI (Pol) jabłoń/jabłonka. Meaning: apple tree.

MICHAŁOWSKI (Pol) Michał. Meaning: who is like God.

STANKIEWICZ (Pol) stan. Meaning: stand or from the name Stanisław.

Mathias Bielicki (1801-1852), son of Laurenz & Magdalena Bielicki, married Anna Stankiewicz (1804) at the Roman Catholic church of St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr at the Parish of Subkau (Subkowy) on the 11th of January 1824. They resided in the village of Bresnow (Brzeżno) in the Parish of Klonowken (Klonowka) ethnically the region of Kociewie in the greater Danzig (woj.gdańskie) district, which at this time was part of West Prussia under German occupation. Here they had their first child, Catharina (1824). From here the family moved south to the Parish of Groß Gartz (Wielkie Garc) where the family resided in the village of Rauden (Rudno). Here a futher five children were born being; Marianna (1828-1859), Michael Peter (1830), Mathias Ludwig (1832-1902, Barbara Rosalia (1834) & Johann Jakob (1836). From here the family moved back to the Parish of Subkau where they had Joseph (1839) in the village of Groß Watzmirs (Waćmierz).

Mathias Ludwig Bielicki (1832-1902), known as Martin in New Zealand, married Marianna Jabłońska (1842-1876), the daughter of Philip Jabłoński & Marianna Michałowska of Swaroschin (Swarożyn), at the Roman Catholic church of The Holy Trinity in the Parish of Liebschau (Lubiszewo Tczewskie) on the 3rd of November 1861. The couple travelled south to the Parish of Subkau, where Mathias worked as a farm labourer. In the village of Starenschin (Starzęcin) they had a daughter, Paulina (1863-1943). Moving to the village of Rathstube (Radostowo) they had a son, Joseph (1864-1940). In the village of Groß Watzmirs (Waćmierz) they had the following: Johann (1866), Maria Madgalena (1867-1926), Robert Paul (1870-1871) & Anna Elizabeth (1872-1951). The family finally moved to the village of Gerdin (Gorzędziej) where they gave birth to Franz (1875).

The family travelled for Hamburg, Germany via Gdańsk from the village of Gerdin. Here they set aboard the ship "Terpischore" sailing on the 15th of November 1875 and arriving at Wellington, New Zealand on the 18th of March 1876. Listed on board ship the family were; Mathias 39, Marianna 31, Pauline 12, Jozef 11, Maria 7, Anna 3, Franz 2 & Augustin 2.

During the voyage there were eight deaths and five births. On arrival, the ship was immediately placed in quarantine because of typhoid and the passengers were transferred to the Quarantine Station on Soames Island, in Wellington Harbour. One of the eight deaths during the voyage was that of Maria Bielicka (mother) who died from typhoid fever on the 4th of February 1876 and was buried at sea.

From here Martin & family travelled to the South Island where the railway was in progress, finally settling in the settlement of Germantown, now known as the Waikaka Valley, 5km north of Gore. How Martin coped with his large young family on first arrival in the country is hard to imagine.

During 1879 Martin bought section 9 of block 7 in the town of East Gore. Some of the next generation seem to have followed their father's footsteps in railway construction, as was the occupation of some of the boys and their brother in laws.

Martin becoming blind in his later years was institutionalised to the Otago Benevolent Institution (Tall Boys) in Caversham, Dunedin on the 24th of January 1902 where he died on the 29th of June 1902 and is buried at the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin. Grave

Joseph married Rosalia Kowalewski in a double wedding in the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart, Greytown on the 1st of May 1889. Here they settled and had 5 boys & 4 girls. Joseph was naturalised on the 14th of November 1893 at the age of 29. Joseph died on the 6th of December 1940 aged 76 & Rose died on the 29th of April 1941 aged 78. Both are buried at the Allanton Cemetery. Grave

Maria Magdalena married David Roberts in Gore in 1890. They had 2 boys & 2 girls. Maria died in Dunedin on the 19th of December 1926 & David died in 1931.

• Annie & Paulina (nee Bielicka):
  Anna Elizabeth married Frank Kowalewski in a double wedding, which took place on the 1st of May 1889 as earlier mentioned. They had 1 boy & 5 girls. Anna died on the 6th of February 1951 aged 78 & Frank died on the 8th of July 1941. Both are buried at the Allanton Cemetery.

Franz married Emma Jane Sparks in Gore in 1895. Emma Jane was the daughter of Paulina Bielicki's husband, James Sparks, from his first marriage. Emma was born in Tasmania and was 3 years old at the time of arrival in New Zealand. Together they had a family of 3 boys & 4 girls. Emma died on the 17th of March 1944 aged 71 & is buried at the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.

Augustin (1873-1939), known in New Zealand as Thomas August, the nephew of Martin & Marianna, was born in the village of Groß Watzmirs to Johann Bielicki & Catharina Jabłońska. Johann & Martin were brothers & Catharina was the older sister of Marianna (nee Jabłońska). Thomas August married Rose Halfka (Haftka) in the Catholic Church at Gore on the 2nd of June 1896. Rose with her family had also arrived in New Zealand on the "Terpischore". Thomas & Rose had 5 boys & 1 girl. Thomas died on the 19th of March 1939 aged 65 & Rose died on the 13th of August 1952 aged 77. Both are buried at the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.
