CRDITORS' MEETINGS.

RE JOHN SCHULTZ, GORDON, LABORER.
In this case Mr. Finn appeared for the debtor and Mr. Fletcher for Messrs Aitken and Latham. Debtor's statement showed liabilities, all unsecured, amounting to L145 12s 5d, and assets L41 10s. The following are the creditors: -F M Dawson, L20; MacGibbon and Sons, L11 11a 7d; Smaill and Brown, L26; Alex Brown, L5 13s; Aitken and Latham, L5 16s; Hunter and Frazer, L1 3s; J Jamie, L1; Reid and Gray, L2 15s 6d; J Beattie, L3 12s 6d; T Hewitt, L5; Dr. Cottew, L4; Dr. Cox, L2 2a; Leslie, Lane, and Dobie, L5 8s 6d; S Hansen, 10s; J Heherr, L5; J Murdoch, L14 2s 4d; F McKay, 8s; J Heffernan, L8 10s; Kingdon and Sons, L5; Gordon Town Board, L2 15s; F S Canning, L3 10s; N Z Tablet Co. L1; J J Kennedy, L2 15s 6d. The assets consisted of lease of section 9, block XXIV, Gordon, with cottage thereon, total value set down at L40, and horse and saddle L1 10s.
In reply to Mr. Fletcher debtor attributed his position to losses on land on the Otakarama Estate. He had to leave it and got L20 for the improvements, having lost about L80 on the transaction. Came to Gore and purchased the lease he now held secondhand from Mr. P Hood. Had no money. Could get no work for 12 months, his wife and family were sick, and it took him all his time to keep his family.
Mr. Murdoch asked how it was debtor built a house if he had no money.-Debtor was understood to say he hoped he would get work.
Mr. Smaill said debtor had asked him for credit for a pound or so and it was given. The next time he saw the account, a week or so afterwards, he had got more than L20 in his (Mr. Smaill's) absence. He sent his wife and got L11 or L12 twice over. Such conduct was no better than stealing.
Debtor said his family was naked and he had no money.
The Assignee: How long have you been in the Colony?-About 12 years.
The Assignee: Well, I think you had better go back and try to pay off some of these tradesmen.
Mr. Smaill: What about the cows and calves at your place? Oh! I sold them last November. Those that are there belong to Kennedy.
Mr. Beattie: Have you any offer to make? No.
Mr. Beattie: Did you get some money for harvesting?-I got L3 9s from Chittock. That was all.
Mr. Smaill: Did you not get some money for working on a contract for Chittock? Were you not working for him about 12 months?-No, I got L8 out of the contract.
Mr. Smaill: Have you paid any body within the last three months?-I have had to buy for cash. Have spent about L7 or L8 with Mr. Brown.
Mr. Brown: Did you not get L130 out of a horse race?-There were a lot of expenses out of that. I got L102 altogether.
The debtors was further examined by the Assignee as to the date of his accounts with MacGibbon and Sons and Smaill and Brown, and said he could make no offer to his creditors even if given time. He had to keep his family.
Mr. Macleod thought it would be better to adjourn in order the debtor might make some offer. He had evidently been living on the public for some time, and it had evidently been a question of how to get rather than how to pay. The house would be sold, as also the horse and saddle, and the meeting would be adjouorned sine die. "The Mataura Ensign", 15 July 1887.
