Some members of a German family named Gutschlay were severely burned at Otakia on Tuesday night or early on Wednesday morning. The man, his wife and baby, were sleeping in a tent, and the woman, just before they retired to rest, took in a tin billy filled with hot ashes, for the purpose, we believe, of keeping the child warm. While they were asleep the ashes blew out and set fire to the tent. The husband was severely burnt about the head and face, and was last night lying insensible in the hospital. The woman, who is also severely injured, was brought into town by the Police early this morning and placed in the hospital. The child, which is a year old, was also burned, but not to severely. "Otago Daily Times", 27 August 1874.
