Jankowski Family (pronounced Yaankovskee)

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

JANKOWSKI derives from the Polish name Jan. Meaning: the lord graced.

Franz Jankowski (1828-1886), the son of Franz Jankowski & Mary Wysmuska, married (1856 Gardschau) Mathilda Ellent (1834-1871). They resided in West Prussia, ethnically the region of Kociewie in the Danzig (Gdansk) district of Poland. Following the matrimony day their location can not be found, but they had children; Julius (1861-1887)) & Maria (1864). They are finally located in the village of Schiwialken (Siwialka) in the Parish of Gardschau (Godziszewo) where two further children were born; Franciszka (1866) & Apollonia (1869-1870). During May of 1871, Mathilda died in the village of Schiwialken. Franz later married Rosalia Szymska (1837) but have not located where.

The family left Schiwialken for Hamburg via Gdansk and set aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. The family aboard ship were Franciszek 43, Rosalia 25, Juliusz 9, Maria 8 & Franciszka 7. The family briefly resided at the settlement of Greytown before settling in Waihola where Franz continued to work on the main trunk line. He is recorded as acquiring five crown grant entitlements of land at Waihola on the 11th of October 1878. Franz & Rosalia had two children in New Zealand, being; Rosella Julianna (1877) & Franz (1879). The family during the early 1880's migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where they had the following children; Theresa (1884) & Ellen Jane (1886). Franz died in West Hotham, Melbourne in 1886 aged 59 & Rosalia died around 1915 in Victoria, Australia.
