SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

KLUKOWSKI (Pol) kluka. Meaning: hook.

LOMANSKI (Pol) lom-, lam-. Meaning: break.

TYKOWSKI (Pol) tyka. Meaning: perch or steak.

John Thomas Klukowski (Janusz) (1845-1897) maried (1872 Dirschau) Franciszka Tykowska (1847-1884), the daughter of Franz Tykowski & Marianna Narzynska. John was born in the village of Gr. Malsau (Malzewo) to Paul Klukowski & Catharina Lomanska.

John & Franciska gave birth to Franz (1874-1875) while living in the settlement of Kohlin (Kolnik), in the Parish of Muhlbanz (Milobadz), West Prussia, in the ethnic region of Kociewie, in the district of Gdansk, Poland.

They left for Hamburg, via Gdansk, setting aboard the ship "Terpsichore" which sailed on the 15th of November 1875 arriving at Wellington, New Zealand on the 18th of March 1876. On board was Johann 31 & Franciszka 28. Also on board were Franz Tykowski, a brother, together with his young family. Johann & Francisca headed south, residing in the township of Germantown (Waikaka Valley) near Gore, where they joined other Poles working on the railway.

On the 25th of September 1884 John married Eva Baumgardt (Christina), the daughter of Paul Baumgardt & Anna Fliss who arrived on the "Palmerston" in 1872. Eva died on the 2nd of September 1890 aged 25 and is buried at the Gore Cemetery. John Klukowski died on the 2nd of March 1897 aged 56 and is buried at the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
