Plewa Family (Pronounced Plaver)

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

KOCHANSKI (Pol) kochac. Meaning: to love or (Ger) koch - cook. Also from the topographical place: Kochanow.

KOSKOWSKI (Pol) possibly kos. Meaning: blackbird.

PLEWA (Pol) plewa. Meaning: husk, shell.

The family left Hamburg, via Gdansk, aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. The family on board ship were August 27, Franciszka 31, Franz 2 & Angelika 5.

From the immigration barracks in Dunedin, August & family were sent down to Greytown (Allanton) along with many of their countryfolk to work on the Southern Railways. The family soon moved to the township of Waihola & later south to Akatore. Here August & Franciszka had the rest of the family being; John Patrick (1874), August Michael (1875-1935), Joseph (1878-1944), Julius Thomas (1881), & Francis (1889).

In the '1882 Freeholders', August is listed as owning 2 acres to the value of £100 in the settlement of Akatore near Milton & was naturalised on the 15th of September 1887 as a labourer residing at Milton.

August Plever died on the 20th of September 1913 & Frances Plever died on the 7th of September 1934 and are both buried at the Fairfax Cemetery Milton. Grave
