Jacob Szczepański was born (1837-1914) in the village of Dalwin, in the Parish of Mühlbanz (Miłob±dz), to Peter Szczepański & Anna Filtzek. Jacob married (1859 Gardschau) Barbara Ciesnikowska (1832-1865), the daughter of Francis Ciesnikowski & Anna Nirzwicka.

Barbara had given birth to a son prior to marriage being: Joseph (1857) in the village of Labuhnken (Trzcińsk), West Prussia, in the ethnic region of Kociewie, in the district of Danzig (Gdańsk), Poland. They remained in Labuhnken where they had the rest of the family being; Franciszka Rosalia (1859-1884), Josephina (1861-1955) & Anna (1864-1866). Jacob's wife Barbara unfortunately died on the 20th of August 1865 & he remarried (1867 Liebschau) to Marianna Grenz (1836-1881).

The family left the village of Labuhnken, for the city of Hamburg, via Gdańsk. They left Hamburg, Germany on the 10th of May 1874 where they set aboard the ship "Reichstag", arriving at Port Nicholson, Wellington, New Zealand on the 6th of August 1874. The family aboard ship were Jacub 35, Maria 44, Rosalia 14, & Josefina 12. From Wellington they set for the South Island.

The family during the late 1870's lived in the southern settlement of Germantown, an old coal reserve where a number of their country folk where residing. Most of these settlers were working on the main southern railway line from Gore to Clinton until it's completion on the 2nd of November 1877.

Later Jacob moved to Dunedin sometime after the death of his wife Maria who died in May of 1881 and is buried at the Gore Cemetery.

Jacob Szczepański was naturalised on the 27th of October 1903 as a labourer residing in Caversham, Dunedin and died on the 6th of July 1914 & is buried at the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
