Waihola Cemetery

Waihola is situated on the main South Highway, approx 25 miles south of Dunedin. The Cemetery is on the hill just above the township.

We regret to be compelled to refer to the Cemetery at Waihola. Our informant was a recent eye-witness of its really disgraceful condition. He informs us that weeds are growing over the graves and more than one grave enclosure lies on the ground, having been knocked down by straying animals. Surely, this is a subject which demands the immediate attention of the Trustees, who are the legal representatives of the relations of the tenants of the graves referred to. We feel convinced that this brief allusion to the neglected state of the Waihola Burial Reserve will elicit a ready response from the settlers in the neighbourhood. A MEETING of the Waihola Cemetery Trustees was held on Saturday. There were present - Messrs Mackay, Cragie, Fraser, Williamson and Bannatyne. Mr. Quartley attended as a deputation from the Waihola Road Board to urge upon the trustees the desirability of fixing upon a site for a cemetery at Waihola, and severing their connection with that at Clarendon. After consideration the trustees declined to accede to the request. "The Bruce Herald", 05 September 1882.
