Wróblewski Family (pronounced Vrooblevskee)

SURNAMES & THEIR ORIGINS

SZWOCHA (Pol) szwoch. Meaning: uncle, relative.

WALINSKI (Pol) name element Wal- as from Walenty. Meaning: strong, healthy.

WISNIEWSKI (Pol) wisnia. Meaning: cherry-tree or from wisniak. Meaning: cherry wine.

WROBLEWSKI (Pol) wrobel. Meaning: sparrow.

Johann Wroblewski (1845-1903), the son of Franz Wroblewski & Marianna Wisniewska married (1872 Liebschau) Catharina Walinska (1853-1924), the daughter of Joseph Walinski & Franciska Szwocha.

Johann & Catharina left the village of Stenzlau (Stanislawie), West Prussia, located in the ethnic region of Kociewie, in the district of Gdansk, Poland for Hamburg, via Gdansk. Here they set aboard the ship "Palmerston" on the 29th of July 1872 arriving at Port Chalmers, Otago, New Zealand on the 6th of December 1872. The family on board ship were Johan 27 & Catherina 19.

Johann along with other fellow Poles accepted contract work on the Southern Railway Line and settled in the township of Greytown (Allanton) where they had their large family being; Anthony (1874-1936), John (1875-1875), Joseph (1875-1875), Frank (1876-1955), Mary (1878-1949), August (1881), John Patrick(1883-1940), Anna (1885), Joseph (1887), Catherine (1890), Martha (1892-1945) & George (1895).

John Wroblefski was naturalised on the 26th of August 1899 as a labourer residing in Allanton.

John died on the 30th of July 1903 aged 58 & Catherine died on the 10th of December 1924 aged 71. Both are buried at the Allanton Cemetery. Grave
